Gender Stereotypes: Are They True?

There has been many gender stereotypes that have developed over the years, some of them are just purely skewed with sexism while others...not so much. I ran into two of these articles awhile ago and I thought that I found pretty intresting. One disproves the validity six stereotypes while the other actually proves the existence of six others. What do you make of these articles.

Do You Really Have A Choice?

 This caught my attention because the study of how we choose our sexual partners has always fascinated me. I have heard of smell and physically appealing traits due to symmetry, but never the subconscious decisions based upon the amount of sperm or eggs we have.

Do you like sex? Do you only choose women whose waists are 71 % of their hips?  Or ladies do you only choose sturdy men who will provide you with a strong frame during ovulation? Apparently your choice in partners is all biological. According to Dr. Matthew H. Erdelyi of Brooklyn college its all a matter of science that influences our sexual decisions. We choose our partners based on their physical characteristics that exhibit health and on their proficiency of procreation.  This whole time I thought it was because of personality. Does this apply to you or are you the outlying factor?

Gender is recognized to be an important component in the understanding many aspects of behavior.  In psychology gender is often observed without much consciousness, but recognizing its significance of different ways in experimental research can help identify more beneficial ways to use gender to study psychological phenomenas.


 Psychological research on gender frequently focuses on sex differences, within sex variability, and gender roles - has begun to integrate a new understanding.  Psychologists can advance in the understanding of gender's significance with the following resources: social science theories that link individual and social levels of analysis, constructs, and conceptual tools generated in feminist theory.

Gender Identity Disorder

Gender identity disorder (GID) or transsexualism is often defined by intense feelings of identification with the opposite gender and discomfort with one's own assigned sex.  Those with GID desire to live as someone of the opposite sex and usually dress and use mannerisms associated with the other gender. 

Many of those with gender identity disorder become isolated, regardless of if it is by choice or not, this can lead to low self-esteem and may lead to other social aversions. 

Children that have gender identity disorder may demonstrate separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and symptoms of depression.  Adolescents are at risk for depression and suicide attempts.  Adults may have and display anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Beyond Macho: Defining a Man's World

Males are stereotyped as the all-powerful protector and provider, which pressures them (Nebenzahl ).    Women's studies have been covered in universities across the country since the early 1970s, minimum research on academic male courses could be found. 

The drive to study masculinity could be seen as a logical, extended version of women's studies, viewing the problems of gender and the social construction of sexuality mostly from a female perspective.  

The aggressive arena of men's sports and its connection to more of a serious emotional damage is not being studied by Concordia sociology graduate student, Cheryl MacDonald.  Her research tries to understand how these "masculine" behaviors are linked to the way in which young men are socialized.
